Becoming the Church that Jesus Builds [November 14, 2010]
Sermon Notes Matt.16:13-18 When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, "Who do people say the Son of Man is?" They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, Jeremiah or one of the prophets." "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" 16 Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God." Jesus replied, "Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven. And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.The Church We Build: 1. Has become a "place where" rather than "a people who" 2. Has confused Holiness with institutional leadership and avoidance of evil 3. Creates an environment where knowledge trumps authenticity 4. Focuses on issues and forgets about people The Church That Jesus Builds: John 15:12 "My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you." 1. Is radically Inclusive 2. Finds pleasure in washing feet 3. Intently pursues the little things 4. Finds great joy in sharing the resources 5. Refuses to be controlled by culture or money or what other people think 6. Experiences a freedom that cannot be explained 7. Joy becomes a real word with names and places and dates 8. Is less concerned with departure than with arrival 9. Does not confuse happiness with joy 10. Obeys Christ's command to love one another |
