Sermon Notes A. “I’m Good!” 1. Characteristics of Hidden Agenda a. Person is hero of all their stories. b. Person creates an ideal character but not their authentic self. c. Person never gets close to anyone because they are only known through the “I’m good!” stories. 2. Truth: “I am a mixture of strengths and weaknesses.” B. “I’m Good (But You’re Not)!” 1. Characteristics of Hidden Agenda a. Person proves they are good by showing how bad everyone else is b. Person uses implied criticism. c. Person tells others how good they life would be if it weren’t for others. 2. Truth: “I do not have to tear you down to make me good.” C. “You’re Good (But I Am Not)!” 1. Characteristics of Hidden Agenda a. Person uses flattery of others while putting themselves down. b. Person uses this approach to extract favors or compliments. c. Person uses this approach to block expectations 2. Truth: “I have value and worth.” D. “I’m Helpless, I Suffer!” 1. Characteristics of Hidden Agenda a. Person stories focus on misfortune and injustice. b. Person does not want to address pain because they are not responsible or too difficult. c. Person uses this for maintaining helplessness 2. Truth: “I will and have experienced pleasure and pain in life. Both are opportunities to grow.” E. “I’m Blameless!” 1. Characteristics of Hidden Agenda a. Person uses excuses for failures. b. Person blames others. 2. Truth: “I do fail, so I need to take responsibility.” F. “I’m Fragile!” 1. Characteristics of Hidden Agenda a. Person tells stories of past betrayal. b. Person makes it clear they need protection and makes you feel guilty when you do not go along with their need. c. Person often speaks in soft voice. 2. Truth: “I can forgive and grow.” G. “I’m Tough” 1. Characteristics of Hidden Agenda a. Person can do everything for everyone. b. Person communicates in a busy and harried manner c. Person is looking for admiration and assurance that they have value and worth. 2. Truth: “I do not have to prove my worth.” H. “I Know It All!” 1. Characteristics of Hidden Agenda a. Person communicates to inform or entertain. b. Person is trying to impress or intimidate. 2. Truth: “I can listen actively.” Connection Commitment: “I will daily ask God to reveal the motivations and agendas behind my words and deeds.” |
