Sermon Notes

Proverbs 27:10 (NLT) Never abandon a friend—either yours or your father's. Then in your time of need, you won't have to ask your relatives for assistance. It is better to go to a neighbor than to a relative who lives far away.

1. Put myself in a position to meet people.

2. Provide encouragement

Acts 4:36 (NLT) For instance, there was Joseph, the one the apostles nicknamed Barnabas (which means "Son of Encouragement"). He was from the tribe of Levi and came from the island of Cyprus.

  • Through my words

Matthew 12:36-37 (NLT) And I tell you this, that you must give an account on judgment day of every idle word you speak. 37 The words you say now reflect your fate then; either you will be justified by them or you will be condemned."

Psalm 15:1-3 (CEV) Who may stay in God's temple or live on the holy mountain of the LORD? 2Only those who obey God and do as they should. They speak the truth 3and don't spread gossip; they treat others fairly and don't say cruel things.

  • Acts of kindness
  •  Listening

1 Thessalonians 5:11 (NLT) So encourage each other and build each other up, just as you are already doing.

3. Play together

Ecclesiastes 8:15 (NLT) So I recommend having fun, because there is nothing better for people to do in this world than to eat, drink, and enjoy life. That way they will experience some happiness along with all the hard work God gives them.

4. Pray specifically for my friends.

5. Pursue an opportunity to talk about God.

  1. Confrontational– Peter
  2. Intellectual– Paul
  3. Testimonial – The Blind Man
  4. Interpersonal – Matthew
  5. Invitational – Woman at the well
  6. Service – Dorcas

John 17: 13-26 (TNIV) I am coming to you now, but I say these things while I am still in the world, so that they may have the full measure of my joy within them. 14 I have given them your word and the world has hated them, for they are not of the world any more than I am of the world. 15 My prayer is not that you take them out of the world but that you protect them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, even as I am not of it. 17 Sanctify them by[d] the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, I have sent them into the world. 19 For them I sanctify myself, that they too may be truly sanctified.

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”
